For the past year, the whole world has been really overwhelmed by the chaos brought in by the ongoing pandemic. Many feel the worries, anxiety, and depression, and most of all the sense of unpredictability and uncertainty. Just as the COVID-19 virus, stress is contagious as we watch many people from around the globe get infected, suffered, and died. We feel useless, thinking that we couldn’t do anything to help them as we might contract the virus too. We almost feel some sense of hopelessness as we’re becoming too exhausted from the sudden changes this experience has caused us. Finding calm amidst the COVID-19 pandemic might just be the most important thing we can do right now and hope that better days are waiting in the near future.
These simple calming practices may not be the cure for this stressful phase of our lives, but these can really pull off some of the worrisome experience or thought, so we can feel calm and peaceful whenever we feel filled…
Gratitude is the appreciation or acknowledgement of the goodness in our lives. Stop focusing on the negativity of this pandemic. Instead, take time to think and be grateful of what good things we have gained while being locked down. We can be grateful for now having a lot of time to spend with our family, that we have each other in spite of what’s happening, and most importantly that we are safe. Remember that gratitude helps us connect to other people than just ourselves.
Mindfulness can reduce anxiety. Although it might not eliminate it completely, it will surely keep you grounded during this time of uncertainty and place you in your own “special place” where you can be safe. Practice S.T.O.P.—Stop, Take a breath, Observe your feelings, and Proceed. Put aside whatever you are doing or thinking, and try to forget all of the COVID-19 thing. Breathe in and out several times and feel the sensation of the air going in and out of your nose. You can close your eyes and have an awareness of your body and feeling.
It is pretty much overwhelming to think about what the future holds for us all, but doing this can bring a lot of anxiety and fear, which could greatly impact our mood and motivation. Just think of the present and what you can do now. Uncertainty is usually focused on worries about the future and the bad things you anticipate will be happening, which can make you feeling hopeless and more depressed. Create a space where you can create a mental block of the future possibilities, so you’re mind won’t get exhausted thinking about them.
Despite the lockdown and the heavy constraints we’re facing right now, it is always important to understand and remind ourselves that we need each other and we are still connected. Being in isolation to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19, you may find it hard to have an actual face-to-face conversation with someone else as this is more sincere, we can make use of the technology to stay in touch and send each other some loving and caring messages, or even prayers.
Eat healthy, drink a lot of water, exercise, and most of all, rest and sleep. This practice is the simplest way to boost up our immune system and our best defense against the virus. Stay positive and know that we’re all going to have to be patient. Focus on the positive side of life and of having to experience this chaos. This can help you take better care yourself and others.
The global pandemic has change the way we live our lives, and this experience really feels daunting. It can be hard to cope, but hopefully we’ll be able to get through it. Remember, the only way out the storm is to ride through it.
